Motion Computing have always pushed the boundaries of mobile technology and we are constantly impressed with their well thought out products that improve the lives of mobile workers.

Over the last two years we have seen Motion Computing bring in some major innovations such as:

Switching to Intel Core 2 Duo and now Intel Core i7 processors ensuring that mobile workers aren’t stuck with second best (i.e. slow!) technology

Introducing Corning Gorilla Glass eliminating the weakest point of Tablet PCs rugged and non-rugged alike – the screen

Bringing to market the Hydis AFFS+ display – in our opinion the best indoor outdoor display technology currently available

Introducing Windows 7 on all of its products at the launch on October 22 2009 enabling the advantages of the Windows 7 platform to reach customers

Continuing to embrace and improve mobile broadband technology to make working remotely like being in the office.

Adding touch to the range with the introduction of the Motion Computing J3500 making it the only Intel Core i7 slate Tablet PC with both touch and pen on the market.

Motion Computing continue to define the slate Tablet PC market and we congratulate them on winning the Microsoft 2010 OEM Partner of the Year Award.

Our own Brett Gilbertson wrote an article for www.gottabemobile.com this week that discusses good hardware and software design for touch screen PCs. The newly released Motion J3500 is a great example of the best hardware design for touch.

The simple key to improving the touch experience is that the touch screen should not be recessed into surrounding plastic bezel.

As you can see in the picture below, the exceptional Hydis AFFS+ screen on the J3500 sits flush with the bezel. That makes it easy for your fat fingers to get into the corners of the screen (to close and minimize windows) thereby eliminating one of the most frustrating aspects at Windows and touch.

It also helps with the Wacom Active digitizer pen too!

We now have a Motion J3500 product page on our website with some more details for you.

We have been using a combination touch and digitizer on our Fujitsu Tablet PCs for a while now, and the announcement or the Wacom multi-touch capacitive touch screen on the J3500 fills a hole in previous models.

Some of the applications that you might find for a combination touch and digitizer tablet are:

Point of sale (POS)

Music recording

Simple field data collection

Navigation.

Touch adds a level of speed and simplicity for simple tasks like navigating and repetitive data entry (such as Point of Sale).

On the other hand, the active digitizer pen is essential for note taking, fast handwriting recognition and accurate input – tasks such as writing, emailing, drawing, sketching and plan measurement.

In the last 2 years Motion Computing has really run ahead in the Tablet PC field by focusing on the core market for Tablets – field workers. This includes industries like mining, construction, engineering, field sales, healthcare, surveying and inspections.

Local, federal and state government departments are have heavily adopted both of the Motion Computing products for field work. In many cases the are replacing old style bulky and heavy ruggedized solutions with the new sleek Motion products.

Both the Motion J3500 and the Motion F5v are exceptional products for anyone who works on the road, in the car or on site. They generally stand out in the market for a few reasons:

Desktop replacement power – Intel® Core™ i7 and i5 with vPro™

A super tough package – Both the J3500 and F5v conform to the US Military MIL810G standard and are IP rated. Both sport Corning Gorilla Glass which is five times stronger than any other Tablet PC screen.

Best outdoor display available – The Motion Hydis AFFS+ display uses smart technology, not just screen brightness to achieve perfect outdoor viewing and perfect 180 degree viewing angles.

3 year Australian warranty – When things go wrong, everything on these machines can be fixed or replaced locally

Tough but not heavy - Both weigh around 1.6kg (with one battery on board)

As an independent Tablet PC reseller (and we have dozens of Tablet PCs at our disposal) we find the Motion Tablet PCs very hard to beat in many applications.

I personally use a C5 for my day to day tableteering, so I’m quite excited about this update.

The Motion C5v is of course commonly used in the healthcare sector while the Motion F5v can be found in field service sectors like construction, mining and emergency services.

The C5v and F5v have retained the successful MCA form factor as well as the exceptional Hydis AFFS+ reflective and transflective display and the recently added super tough Corning Gorilla Glass.

Highlights of the revamp include:

A choice between Intel Core i5 and i7 processors (battery life v performance)

4Gb DDR RAM

Gobi 2000 global mobile broadband option with standalone GPS

MIL 810G ruggedness certification (up from 810F)

30% better battery life, now up to 5 hours

Hot swappable batteries (up to 5 minute runtime without a battery)

Intel vPro™ for advanced remote management (even from a fully powered off state)

New front facing webcam for video conferencing and an upgraded 3mp rear cam

A USB port – sorely missed on the current C5 and F5

This revamp will massively increase performance over the Core 2 even on the i5 model thanks to the new front side bus and DDR 3 support. Unlike other MCAs and field slates that use Intel Atom processors, the C5 and F5 has enough power to replace a laptop or desktop.

What I personally like about the F5 is that it is very mobile, based around a 10.1” screen, but it still has the power to be my mobile office. When I’m in the office, I have it docked with an external screen and keyboard and I use it like a multi-display desktop.

The combination of a fully operating Windows 7, Office 2010 (especially OneNote and Outlook) makes the F5 more than just a companion device. It much smaller and lighter than most laptops, and you can just grab it and go without limitations… And that’s what I want from a full time slate computer!

For want of a better analogy, RFID is a smarter barcode system. It is often used for inventory tracking and identification.

Unlike a barcode which is read only, information can be written to RFID tags on the fly with a device like the Motion F5. Software applications that run on the Windows based F5 will allow you to read and manipulate the tags.

Motion Computing have published the following demonstration video showing how to use the RFID reader.

The F5 and C5 are also tagged with a passive RFID tag so that you can track them too. The video shows the location of the passive RFID tag (We knew it was in there, but now we know where!).

I got caught out in one of Melbourne’s four seasons (the rainy one) with one of our Motion F5 tablet PCs recently. As you can see from the video below, the Motion F5 has an IP 54 rating, so it takes it all in stride…

The Motion F5 has an IP54 rating for water and dust resistance. IP is an industrial rating scale for Intrusion Protection. The first number, in this case a 5 relates to the dust rating, and the second number relates to the water rating.

To achieve these ratings, the Motion F5 – and for that matter the Motion C5 – must run through a series of physical endurance tests. The machines must operate through the testing without failure. To see the tests in action, watch below:

Motion F5 Water Test

Water is sprayed constantly onto the Motion F5 from all sides for 1 hour. It must continue to operate throughout the test.

Motion Dust Protection Test

Whilst this video shows the Motion J3400, the Motion F5 and C5 pass the same test. The Tablet PCs are subjected to a fine dust cloud for 8 hours and must continue to operate.

Motion F5 Drop Test

The Motion F5 unit is dropped from 3 feet onto all sides, corners and faces. It must continue to operate throughout this test to pass.

Motion F5 Gorilla Glass Test

This demonstration shows a 1kg ball bearing dropped onto the screen. As you can see, the screen flexes but does not break thanks to the Corning Gorilla Glass technology.

Tablet PCs like these go into places that regular computers don’t go. It is important that you choose a Tablet PC that is designed to go where you want it to go!
