Motion Computing F5t has arrived

Sep

2012

It’s been an incredibly busy time here at Tablet PC and I’m ashamed to say that this one slipped by without a shout! Motion Computing have updated the F5 series to the Motion F5t. Take a look at it:

Motion F5t

Well ok, yes, the Motion F5t doesn’t look any different on the surface (much like Apple’s new iPhone) but on the inside the F5t is a complete redesign.

Having said that, all of your existing accessories – desktop, stacking and vehicle docks, port bars, car chargers, batteries, pens and cases – all still work the same with the F5v meaning that you don’t need to throw away all of your existing infrastructure to use the F5t (unlike the iPhone).

It’s shipping now and I’ve been using it for about a week. My first impressions:

  • It’s bloody fast! – Thanks to a Generation 3 “Ivy Bridge” Intel Core i7 processor, the fastest DDR3 notebook RAM around, superfast Sandisk SSD drives and a bunch of other internal improvements, this is now the fastest tablet PC on the market. Let’s also not forget the on-board USB 3 port (10 times faster than USB 2 on previous models)!

  • The battery life is so much better – The F5t uses that same battery as the F5v, but it lasts nearly twice as long thanks to some technical wizardry form Intel and Motion.

  • View Anywhere Display – Now with Touch – For the first time we can use Motion’s legendary View Anywhere Display bonding technology with touch for the best of both worlds. Brilliant outdoor viewing with lightweight capacitive touch.

  • Did I mention that it’s fast?

Of course, being fast means that you never have to wait for even the most complex of applications to load up. It’s pretty much instant. After all, who wants to wait?

New options include factory installed 8Gb RAM and 64bit Windows. Windows 8 will come when it’s released on October 26th.

The unprecedented processing power of the F5t will open up all sorts of applications that you never thought were possible for this beast. Think 3D mine site mapping in Leapfrog etc…

Video coming soon.

Why Electranet in South Australia uses the Motion F5v

You’ve all heard me going on for 20 minutes about why I use the Motion F5v, but what do I know? I’m just a humble Tablet geek! Winking smile

David Peters from South Australia’s high voltage transmission company Electranet took us out onto a 275,000 Volt substation to show us why they also chose the Motion F5v for their field asset inspection teams.

The following video gives a great insight into why so many of Australia’s utility companies have chosen Motion tablets – especially the F5v – for their high demand field jobs.

Electranet uses the Motion F5v for field asset inspections

In case you missed it, the standout features that led Electranet to choose the Motion F5v were:

  1. Motion’s BOE Hydis AFFS+ outdoor display with View Anywhere – it’s still unmatched
  2. Built rugged and ready for onsite use – all over South Australia – from Olympic Dam to Adelaide City
  3. Hot swap fast charging batteries will let you go 24×7 on just 2 batteries
  4. Easy to access integrated barcode reader
  5. Powerful Intel Core i7 processor and standard Windows 7 Professional – allows Electranet to run standard Windows applications.

Tablet PC have helped many of Australia’s largest utility companies – such as Electranet, SP Ausnet, Jemena, Egron Energy, Melbourne Water and many more – to successfully deploy Tablet PCs for their field users.

If you’re still using pen and paper to collect data in the field, you’re falling behind! Contact us to find out how organisations like Electranet are reaping the benefits of Windows 7 Tablet PCs.

Motion F5v Rugged Windows Tablet PC – Now with Touch

Feb

The Motion Computing F5v is the tablet that I personally use when I go mobile (nearly every day). Here are the reasons why:

  • It’s tough – IP54, Mil 810G
  • It’s mobile – 1.5kg, 10” Outdoor Screen
  • It’s connected – Bluetooth, Wifi, 3G, GPS
  • It’s fast – Intel Core i7, i5 or i3 processors
  • It just works!

But until now it’s had the Wacom Active Digitizer Pen but no fingertip touch. That has now changed and the F5v with touch is available and shipping as we speak!

Check out the Motion video below and you’ll see why the F5v – still our best selling rugged Tablet PC – is chosen by leading Australian organizations such as Rio Tinto, Newcrest Mining, SP Ausnet, Melbourne Water and many more…

Motion J3500 tablet gets press on SMH

Sep

In her weekend article in the Sydney Morning Herald, “Australian workplaces succumb to the iPad”, Cynthia Karena covers a number of companies who have adopted tablets.

Interestingly the article demonstrates that much of the push for consumer tablets comes from the simple communication needs of executives and board members. For that, consumer tablets like the iPad can do just fine – security policies permitting.

But for ADT security who wanted to deploy tablets for 80 field technicians, the iPad was never going to cut it. Mark Norton, managing director for ADT in Australia is quoted:

"iPads don’t have the power we need. We’re interfacing with disparate systems."

"Customers sign the tablet and the document is instantly loaded into our enterprise system and emailed to the customer," says Norton.

"Laptops don’t allow customers to sign, tablets do."

ADT deployed the Motion Computing J3500 – a rugged Windows 7 tablet designed specifically for field work. It also has an active digitizer pen interface the allows the technicians to input information in their handwriting and also allows customers to sign on the screen.

Mark Norton’s comments echo our experience with deploying tablets to companies like Rio Tinto, Newcrest Mining, Jemena, SP Ausnet, Goulburn Murray Water, Youi Insurance, Dennis Family Homes and many more. Field users require far more than a consumer tablet can offer.

There are many considerations that businesses take into account including:

  • Lack of support for existing applications (deploying remote applications to an iPad is an unworkable compromise)

  • No rugged design – Consumer tablets are not designed to be used outdoors, on building or mine sites and in rugged environments. Adding a bulky bump case does not make a consumer tablet rugged.
  • Limited input options – Consumer tablets do not support usable handwriting input. Handwriting is much faster than one handed typing on a virtual keyboard.
  • Lack of features in available apps – For example the Excel spread sheet readers like Apple’s “Numbers” do not support many formulas or any macros.
  • Cost of developing specific company apps for the next big platform  – It’s only a matter of time before Android takes over in the consumer tablet space like it is doing in the phone space. Which platform do you throw tens, or hundreds of thousands of dollars at? Or do you just go with small tweaks (if needed) on your existing investment?

Thousands of companies in Australia have already deployed tablets to improve their workflow and eliminate double handling. It is good to see an article in the mainstream media presenting the less sexy side of the tablet world with some balance.

Battery Time – 6 hours Straight on a Motion J3400 – This is not Theoretical

Aug

2009

I started working in the office this morning at 9:00 AM on the Motion J3400, but I forgot to bring in my power cable after the ABITE expo on the weekend.

So here I am at 1:30PM and there is 30% battery charge remaining. So that is 60% of one of the 2 batteries on board.

image

At this rate, I’ll be going flat at close the 3:00 PM mark at 6 hours.

I have not optimised my use to make battery life claims. I haven’t stopped yet for lunch and the screen is at full brightness. I’ve been docked with an external monitor and a wireless keyboard all day. WiFi is on and has been in use constantly. I haven’t been in standby or hibernate at all.

So this is why the Motion J3400 is a brilliant choice for field users. If you need a lightweight Tablet PC that can go all day without charging, then you should look at the J3400.

Of course with the hot swap dual battery setup on the J3400 you needn’t let a battery going flat stop you anyway… Just have a spare – they only take an hour and a half to charge!

Best outdoor Display in the Business Comes to the Motion F5 and C5

Jul

2009

We recently made the call that the Motion J3400 has the best outdoor display that we’ve seen to date. It’s time to retract that statement…

Motion Computing have now included their market leading display on the F5 and C5 Tablet PCs.

So now the J3400, C5 and F5 can all be shipped with the remarkable Hydis AFFS+ screen technology. The Hydis screen allows you to have a clear view in direct sunlight without the need for major battery draining backlighting.

That means:

  • Awesome indoor and outdoor viewing
  • Wide viewing angles
  • Maximum battery life

This technology is a huge leap for Tablet PCs and it goes a long way to solving two of the biggest hurdles for Tablet PC deployments – battery life and screen viewing.

For a detailed explanation of screen brightness and outdoor screen technology, read out may post here.

Hydis AFFS

We’ve been using the J3400 with the Hydis AFFS+ display for a few months now and we’re still impressed.

It’s great to see that Motion Computing are continuing to invest in their technology. We also expect to see new products and developments on the horizon from them.

From the field: Why Brightness (nits) does not equal daylight readability

May
27
2009

n38996474484_1184032_4993 Working in the field in direct sunlight has always been challenging. Most Tablet PC vendors now offer some sort of daylight readable display. Beware though, not all daylight displays are created equal.

Some hardware vendors try to pass off daylight readability in terms of brightness, and brightness is measured in nits. So you might see a claim like “500 nits outdoor display.”

We all love to measure things with numbers, but nits is not a good measure of daylight readability.

Simply cranking up the brightness with a stronger backlight on a display causes a number of issues:

  1. Significantly reduced battery life
  2. Washed out colours
  3. Low contrast

The very best solution is actually a display that is readable on little to no brightness on.

In other words, the more readable it is with the least possible nits the better. To achieve the best outdoor readability, you need to address:

  • Reflection – Minimising sunlight reflection with Anti-reflective screen coatings
  • Diffusing – Reflective, transmissive and transflective technologies work to diffuse light out effectively
  • Viewing angles – some achieve up to 180 degrees in all directions, so you can read the display easily at any angle
  • Contrast – This is the true benchmark of daylight readability.

According to Rugged PC Review, the effective contrast of an outdoor display is:

1 + (emitted light / reflected light)

So if the reflected light is high, the emitted light needs to be higher just for the screen to be readable.

Getting reflection, diffusion, viewing angles and contrast right can mean that your display is readable outdoors with very little brightness to speak of.

The new motion J3400 is by far the best example of this. As we demonstrated in our product video, you can actually read this display in direct sunlight on the ZERO brightness setting.

That means that you can go out into the field and run much, much closer to the manufacturers claimed battery life of 7.5 hours.

The J3400 is actually the best outdoor readable screen that we’ve seen on a Tablet PC by far and it sports only 320nits.

A display that has to run at 1000nits to be viewable will of course, not be so good on batteries. So if you have to sacrifice hours in the field just to be able to read the screen, how daylight readable is it really?
