What makes a Windows 8 tablet an ideal enterprise tablet?

Jan

2013

Fujitsu Stylistic Q702 Windows 8 Tablet PCSince consumer tablets exploded onto the market 3 years ago, millions of the devices have found their way into enterprises.

Many of those devices have made it to work through Bring You Own Device (BYOD) programs where employees actually provide their own hardware for work. How many of these employees are happy to submit their own device to restrictive corporate security regimes is anyone guess.

Other companies have rolled out tablet devices such as the Apple iPad to employees for tasks like email, web browsing and basic content consumption. We’ve also seen devices like the iPad enable amazing advances in areas like single app roles like point of sale (Square for example).

But where staff need to access more than just the basics you’ll find that the iPad sits next to a laptop on the desktop. For the vast majority tablets are not capable of handling day to day tasks such as document creation, long form communication, running the numbers, presentations and accessing the network. For all but a few, a tablet has meant an extra device.

So what makes a Windows 8 tablet a true enterprise ready tablet?

win1In the enterprise, made up marketing gimmicks like pixels per inch are irrelevant. Up front cost of devices is also not the major issue. Crazy low, low prices have allowed tablets to become an executive standard, but the current crop of consumer tablets inherently fall short in the enterprise in a number of ways.

Since tablets are so desirable as an executive status symbol, CIOs have had to wear the problems that consumer tablets have created. That is, until now thanks to Windows 8.

“On tablets, 38% of iPad-using organizations are considering migrating to Windows 8 tablets, while 45% of Android-tablet-using organizations are considering migrating to Windows 8.” – ZDnet – In the enterprise windows 8 tablets may zoom past PCs

Until now, none of the Tablets in the public consciousness have even gone half way to matching the enterprise readiness of Windows 8 tablets, such as:

Application support

Microsoft-Excel-InkingWindows 8 offers support for the new wave of Windows less touch friendly apps under the Modern UI, but the real benefit to enterprise is in the Windows desktop.

  • Deploy your existing business applications now – Whilst many business have disappeared down the rabbit hole of rewriting business applications into an app, you don’t have to with Windows 8.The desktop capabilities of a Windows 8 tablets will be the single biggest productivity bonus for tablet users in the enterprise.

Windows 8 tablet users do not need to fiddle around trying to gain network access to remote into the PC back in the office.

The Windows 8 tablet means that your officeMicrosoft-Word-Inking goes with you and so do your applications – touch friendly or not. There’s no need to delay access to critical information on Windows 8 tablets.

  • There’s still no substitute for Office – Of course Google’s cloud alternatives are fully accessible from your Windows 8 tablet, but as many have found there is still no substitute of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. They all run natively on your Windows 8 tablet with support for touch, pen, macros, formulas and many advanced features that you will never find on consumer tablet alternatives.

Whilst the Windows 8 app store shelves are not yet stacked up as high as the Android and iOS ones, the real benefit of Windows 8 is the ability to deploy powerful and critical existing desktop applications today.

Security

Windows-8-BitlockerDevice security is incredibly important to the enterprise. The risks that mobile devices have are easy to perceive:

  • Access to sensitive corporate data
  • Loss of intellectual property
  • Malicious network compromises
  • Down time.

Governing and securing mobile devices has been troublesome with 3rd party solutions required for devices that were designed with Pixels Per Inch in mind, and not corporate IT management.

On the other hand Windows 8 offers a selection of tablets that fit in with existing IT management infrastructure.

  • TPM and Bitlocker – Windows 8 continues on with Windows 7′s enterprise level disk encryption and security key capabilities thanks to the hardware level TPM chip embedded in enterprise Windows 8 tablets.
  • Active Directory Integration – Windows 8 tablets support long established security standards, network access and application management natively out of the box.
  • True multi-user support – Even as a stand alone device Windows 8 supports a secure multi-user environment with security roles and permissions available to manage.
  • Authentication devices – Fingerprint, Smart Card, RFID login options that are integrated into many Windows 8 tablets allow employees to login quickly and securely. Enterprise can enforce complex password requirements without causing constant login frustration.
  • Secure VPN Connectivity – Windows 8 tablets can leverage existing VPN security such as Cisco Anyconnect and many others.

Only Windows 8 tablets offer these essential enterprise security features.

Whilst competitors attempt to cast doubt on Windows security via subterfuge, the reality is that Windows is a secure multi-user environment when properly managed. And that’s a job made easy with the simple tools in place in nearly every IT department in the world today.

Device management and remote support

teamviewer-touch-Windows-8-TabletsFor many years now companies have been managing mass deployments of Windows desktop and laptop pc’s. The tools are very well established, reliable and in many cases free.

  • PXE boot and image deployment – Updating a device to a baseline image including your custom applications, drivers and security updates is incredibly easy with a Windows 8 tablet. It can be quickly and easily done via the network or even a USB memory stick.
  • Security updates – Whilst Windows was once maligned for its constant patches, Microsoft now leads the market with its responsiveness to bugs, security flaws and performance improvements. The subsequent patches are easy for enterprise IT to test and deploy.Consumer tablets on the other hand often require massive downloads per device often with game changing and unwanted features bundled in (Apple Maps anyone?)
  • Remote support – One of the most useful tools available to IT is remote support when a user runs into trouble. These tools are rare, complicated and expensive on mobile devices. Windows 8 tablets can leverage the cheap and simple solutions available on Windows like TeamViewer, LogMeIn, VNC, Copliot and even the built in windows remote desktop capability.

The beauty of the windows 8 tablet is that your IT people already have the tools and know how to manage these tablets.

Battery / Power management

Whilst battery life is held up as the holy grail of tablet success, battery management actually matters far more than battery life. After all, when the battery is flat, 10 hours of battery life means nothing if you can’t charge it quickly or replace it.

  • Fast charging – Tablets like the iPad can take up to 6 hours to charge. The Samsung Series 7 and the Motion F5t take only 2 hours. So a brief lunch stop over to the car charger or power point can keep you going.
  • Removable batteries – Apple fostered an unfortunate trend in mobile devices with non-removable batteries. Many manufacturers have followed suit, but you can still find Windows 8 tablets with removable batteries.Lithium Ion / Lithium Polymer batteries are also prone to life span limitation, so having a devices with removable batteries are particularly serviceable.
  • Hot swap – Certain Windows 8 tablets like the Motion F5t and J3500 allow continuous operation with hot swappable batteries. Coupled with fast charging, this effectively enables 24×7 operation on two batteries.

Business critical applications cannot afford to be halted because someone forgot to plug the tablet in last night. Thankfully there are enterprise ready Windows 8 tablets like the Motion F5t and J3500 than can easily overcome that problem.

Enterprise support

Motion Computing F5v Tablet PC - Barcode ScannerThere’s no need to book in a slot with a genius to get your Windows 8 tablet repaired. Windows 8 tablet vendors and resellers like Tablet PC know how to deliver top notch service to enterprise customers.

  • Warranty Options – On site, courier pick up and extended warranty options are common across Windows 8 tablet vendors.
  • Training - Training is essential to enterprise tablet deployments and with the changes to the Windows 8 interface this will become even more important with Windows 8 tablets. Specialist companies like Tablet PC Solutions deliver this type of training onsite to enterprise customers all over Australia. It is an essential component of a successful tablet deployment.
  • Expertise  - Lastly, Windows 8 tablets are not one-size-fits-all. Enterprises often call on the experience and expertise of companies like ours to evaluate, deploy and manage tablets that are suited to the needs of the job.Having devices available to evaluate in conjunction with training and expertise makes choosing a tablet much easier.

Since Windows 8 tablets range from executive tablets like the Samsung ATIV Smart PC Pro and the Fujitsu Stylistic Q702 to the rugged Motion F5t you can find a tablet that is perfectly suited to an individual project. Having support and expertise available is what makes it all work.

Windows 8 Tablet Adoption

Windows 8 ProThe following quote from the Wall Street Journal referenced in the ZDnet article earlier sums up what many IT departments have found when evaluating Windows 8 tablets:

“I’m hearing a lot less struggle with managing the Windows 8 devices than I have about iPads [from PCL’s IT staff],” Ranger told CIO Journal.

Technically, a lot of the PCL field work could be completed with iPads. But Ranger said he found the iPad limited because it isn’t compatible with Microsoft productivity software, or with apps for cost estimates, project management, or computer-assisted drawing.

Ranger said he and his IT staff would have to do a lot of custom coding and configuration, which would take time that could be better spent doing other tasks to support the business. He also said accessing PCL’s intranet from an iPad was painful because he had to go through VPN; with the Windows 8 tablet, which uses Microsoft’s remote log-in software, he automatically connected to the corporate network.

The iPad also didn’t play well with custom applications PCL wrote using Microsoft’s .NET programming language.”

Consumer tablets will continue to have a place in the enterprise thanks to their cheap prices and cachet. But for anything more than the most casual computing Windows 8 tablets will give enterprises a tool that solves a lot of problems. It is a tool that has been missing until now.

Motion F5t Tablet – BIM Demonstration(Building Information Modelling)

Using Tekla BIMsight on Windows tablet

As demonstrated in the video below, the really awesome thing about a Windows tablet (Windows 7 or Windows 8) is having a full operating system that can run full Windows programs with all of their power and complexity in a mobile form factor.

The video below shows the Motion F5t running Tekla BIMSight and as you’ll see the Motion F5t is built to handle the complex 3D modelling in the program with ease.

Whether you want to run CAD, BIM, GIS or any other software that comes with it’s own TLA (three letter acronym) you’ll find that it is just so much quicker and easier on a full OS tablet than a dumbed down touch only version. Of course with Windows 8 now in the fold you can have both the dumbed down touch version and the complex full OS version with you at all times.

The Motion F5t is perfect for the BIM (Building Information Modelling) job. It is a rugged field tablet with an generation 3 (Ivy Bridge) Intel Core i7 processor, up to 16Gb of DDR 3 RAM and 256Gb SSD. In other words, there is not a more powerful mobile slate tablet available.

And, like the buildings that the Motion F5t is used to manage, it’s built to last for years. There’s a lot to be said for that!

If you only use the best tools for the job, then the Motion F5t is where you start.

Since Motion Computing are based in Austin Texas it’s probably not much of a surprise that a Texas Swing band is using the J3500 as a mixing desk. Austin is renowned for its music scene after all.

The following video interview with Jim Finney, road manager for Asleep at the Wheel will give you an insight into a couple of things that make Windows 7 tablets like the Motion J3500 perfect for the job.

  1. They can run your existing windows programs – not just dumbed down fat finger oriented touch programs.

  2. You can use those programs comfortably with the Active Digitizer Pen technology as found on the Motion J3500
  3. You can work inside, outside and anywhere thanks to the slate form factor, brilliant screen technology and ruggedness of the J3500.

Check out the video below!

Motion Computing Release Quicknav for the CL900

Oct

2011

Motion-CL900-QuicknavIf you own the Motion Computing CL900 you’ll want to try out this new beta version of Quicknav. Quicknav – aka Dialkeys – is a piece of software that has long been featured on the Motion J3500 series.

Quicknav is a sidebar shortcut application that allows quick and convenient access to things like the integrated camera, video and voice recording functions via a touch friendly interface.

On the CL900 it can comfortably replace the ExTouch software that ships with the device for a couple of reasons:

  • Easier access to camera functions
  • Full access to the camera’s full 3Mp resolution
  • Easy selection of front or back camera
  • Geo-tagging via the CL900’s inbuilt satellite based GPS
  • Camera based barcode scanning function.

Dialkeys has actually been around for many years now. I first encountered it on the Samsung Q1 UMPC device about 5 years ago. It has come along way, but some features like Motion-CL900-Bracode-Scannerthe alternative onscreen keyboard still work great with a touch screen device like the CL900.

Barcode Reader

Quicknav offers users the ability to capture barcodes using the devices inbuilt front and back cameras. This feature should not to be confused with the CL900s upcoming inbuilt barcode scanner option.

Capturing Barcodes with an inbuilt camera is only for very occasional use and cannot be compared to inbuilt dedicated barcode scanning hardware. If you need to scan more than about 5 barcodes a day you will want to go with a dedicated barcode scanner as the camera method is too slow and fiddly to use.

Motion-Computing-CL900-Number-PadNumber Pad

On the input front, the on screen Number Pad function is fantastic for entering data in places like Excel spread sheets. You’ll find that the number keys are big and easier to use with touch. The keypad seems to be fixed to the right hand side – sorry Leftys!

Camera

As mentioned above, the camera functionality of the Quicknav software allows you to easily access the full 3 megapixels of the inbuilt front and back webcams.

You can now also geo-tag photos taken with the inbuilt camera. Geo-tagging takes GPS coordinates from the inbuilt GPS on the CL900 and adds them to the properties of the photo. A time stamp can also be added as well as an arbitrary text stamp.

Download Quicknav here:

It’s currently in Beta, so don’t be surprised if you find a bug here or there!

OneNote turns back the Mac switching tide

OneNote-Switches-Mac-Users

As Tablet PC resellers, we have helped many, many Mac users switch to the PC platform. The best kept technology secrets (Windows 7 Tablet PC with OneNote) once discovered are so compelling that even the best of Apple’s marketing machine can’t compete.

The ability to take handwritten searchable notes on a powerful PC platform – once discovered – outguns the slickest, shiniest gadgets that the market has to offer.

Don’t believe me? Then read this from a Tablet PC teacher who wrote in to John Guin’s OneNote blog:Apple-Switch-Comment

From: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/johnguin/archive/2010/12/16/a-nice-letter-from-a-teacher-using-onenote.aspx

This is reminiscent of many of our experiences in switching Mac users to the Tablet PC.

I hope folks high up in Microsoft and their hardware partners take note of comments like this. Many companies like HP, seem to have swallowed the rhetoric on multi-touch and have become blinded to the untouched market for real productivity Tablet PCs (Perhaps why the are jagging around with the HP slate 500).

Fortunately, some companies are alert to the power of Tablet PCs with touch AND pen (Running OneNote!) and you’ll see a number of new tablets emerging shortly into a new age of accessible Tablet PCs for the mass market!

Cheek out the OneNote Facebook page to see how many Mac uses are begging for a Mac, iPhone and iPad version… it’ll never happen of course. Ok, so onenote for iPhone is out now in the US only which will be a big bonus for the masses of PC based iPhone users, but still no sign of Mac and iPad versions…

2009 Was The year of the Tablet PC

Jan

2010

Motion C5 Vehicle MountedAfter a huge run up to the end of 2009, we took some time to think about all of the “2010 – Year of the Tablet PC” rumours. There is no doubt that 2010 is going to be an exciting year for Microsoft Windows based Tablet PCs and UMPCs, and maybe even some Apple and Google ones too.

We’ve already had some very interesting hardware shown this week at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.

However, here at TabletPC.com.au, we think that the year of the Tablet PC was 2009!

Sure, the consumer devices from the like of HP, Lenovo, Viliv and Apple will make some waves this year. On the Windows front we have already seen a wave of pen and multi-touch devices like the Lenovo X200t and Fujitsu T4310 with capacitive touch screens.

But the serious Tablet PC business really kicked off last year. 2009 saw many large and small Australian organizations deploy mobile computing solutions with Tablet PCs.

What happened in 2009 for Tablet PCs?

  1. Tablet-PC-MeetingWindows 7 – Mobile computing  took a huge stride forward in 2009 on the back of improvements in Windows 7.
  2. Outdoor Screen Technology – The introduction of the Hydis AFFS+ display by Motion Computing was a technical breakthrough for Tablet PCs (currently on Motion Computing F5, C5 and J3400) – Most Tablets are used outdoors at some stage, so this technology is essential.

  3. Mobile Broadband Access – We now have Tablet PCs with 21mbps mobile broadband access with GPS onboard.
  4. Applications – Software developers are continuing to embrace mobile applications in areas like building and construction management, building and pest inspections, sales force automation, digital forms, GIS and mapping.

Who started using Tablet PCs in 2009?

Hundreds of Australian  organisations deployed Tablet PCs in 2009 because of advancements in hardware and software that make field computing solutions now practical. Here’s a taste of the types of companies that we helped deploy Tablet PCs with in 2009:

  • Defence and Police Forces around Australia
  • Local Governments from North Queensland to Tasmania and across to WA.
  • Distribution businesses
  • Manufacturing businesses
  • Nurseries, Farms,
  • Building, engineering, architecture and construction companies
  • Physiotherapists, Occupational therapists, Nurses, Doctors, Clinics,  Aged Care Facilities and Hospitals
  • Restaurants, Hotels, Bars and Pubs

And many more from small “Mum and Dad” businesses through to multinational companies.

Why did they choose Tablet PCs in 2009?

Motion-C5-Car-MountOur customers have many reasons for choosing Windows based Tablet PCs for their jobs and projects. They generally boil down to the following:

  • You gain true computing mobility without sacrificing power
  • You can now read the screen without effort
    • Outside reading is comfortable with good battery life
    • Screens are much bigger than PDA (PDA screens are too poky for many jobs)
  • They can run their existing Windows programs without having to learn a new system or pay to develop a completely new one
  • They were surprised to find that handwriting recognition really works, particularly in windows 7
  • You can now work all day away from a power source.

Why did they buy from TabletPC.com.au in 2009?

Using Tablet PCs in 2004The largest to the smallest Australian companies called on tabletpc.com.au for advice in 2009 because we are still the only independent Australian company that employs real Tablet PC and UMPC experts.

  • We sell all of the Tablet PC brands that are available in Australia to independent resellers, including:
  • We are able to give you advice on your specific needs – We don’t have allegiances to any brand, we will only sell you the best device for your job!
  • Our staff have all been involved with Windows Tablet PCs since the launch of Windows XP Tablet PC edition in 2001 – in real world use.
  • We have a worldwide network of software solution providers to make sure
that your Tablet PC is not just a piece of hardware, but a solution that will work for you.
  • We supply training and support with all of our Tablet PCs that cheap web sellers and even the manufacturers just can’t offer (because their staff have no idea about Tablet PCs!) – We make sure that you know how to use your Tablet PC effectively.

Capitaleyes Business Technologies Helps Customers “Go Green” while Streamlining Business Processes

New Software Launch Provides Tablet PC Powered ‘Green’ Mobility Solution

capitaleyes CANBERRA, ACT – April 22, 2009 – Capitaleyes Business Technologies, a leading provider of document driven process improvement solutions, in conjunction with its strategic partner, www.TabletPC.com.au has announced the release of a low cost, high value software suite to the Australian market in support of Earth Day 2009.

The solution suite is centred on bridging the gap between the collection of vital information on paper forms and how and where that information is subsequently stored and then made available throughout the organisation. The use of a true Digital Ink e‐Forms technology, together with the handwriting recognition capabilities of a new generation Tablet PC or UMPC, provides a capability that not only does away with the need for additional data entry but also helps minimise a company’s environmental footprint.

In migrating from traditional paper to electronic business processes, organisations can generate numerous benefits and significant return on investment through more efficient digital workflows and reduced costs. The adoption of electronic processes to exchange information both internally and externally decreases and often eliminates paper, reducing the impact organisations have on the environment by conserving land and water resources as well as decreasing fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

For example, an employee filling out 20 paper forms each month (10 pages each) during site visits could save the following each year by converting just half of these to electronic transactions:

Paper

1 kilograms of paper saved

Water 70 litres of wastewater prevented from discharging into lakes, streams and rivers
Fuel 18.5 litres of fuel saved by not mailing your bills, statements, and payments
Greenhouse Gases 200 kilograms of greenhouse gases avoided
This amount of greenhouse gas is the equivalent of:

700 kilometres not driven in your car

5 trees planted (and grown for 10 years)

10 square metres of forest preserved from deforestation

“Enabling streamlined business process through migration from paper to electronic is a central component of the value we bring and is a common theme across our entire product and service portfolio,” said Kevin Burdette, Principal of Capitaleyes Business Technologies. “By deploying our solutions, organisations can leverage mature technology to drive environmentally‐friendly business practices, lower their carbon footprint and achieve their environmental and business goals.”
