Wacom Bamboo Stylus Feel

May

2013

If you have a Tablet PC with a Wacom Active Digitizer built in then you’ll probably be interested in this accessory. It’s called Wacom Bamboo Stylus Feel.

It is not to be confused with the iPad style capacitive styli that Wacom also make (Bamboo Stylus Solo, Bamboo Stylus Duo, Bamboo Stylus pocket).

The Wacom Bamboo Stylus Feel will work with many of the new Windows 8 tablets as well as most of the old Windows 7 Tablet PCs (a short list of recent compatible tablets below).

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This is not just a capacitive stylus, this is the real deal. The Bamboo Stylus Feel is a Wacom Active Digitizer Pen and it will only work with a tablet that has Wacom Active Digitizer hardware built in.

So that’s a definite no for iPad.

Here is a list of some of the tablets that the Bamboo Stylus Feel will work with:

There are many more Wacom tablets than this brief list, so don’t be afraid to call or email to ask if your tablet is compatible before you buy.

What’s good about the Wacom Bamboo Stylus Feel?

When looked at side by side with the tiny Wacom pens that come with tablets like the Galaxy Notes and the Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet 2 it’s easy to see the key feature of the Stylus Feel. Size.

The Wacom pen that is housed in the ThinkPad is particularly thin and feels flimsy as a result. Bot the Samsung S-Pens and the ThinkPad pens are also too short for comfortable note taking.

The Stylus feel on the other hand is solid and long. It makes the other two pens feel like Pizza Hut pencils (does anyone remember those?).

Also, when compared to some of the more traditionally sized Wacom pens below you can see that the Stylus Feel is much more… well, stylish.

The Bamboo Stylus Feel has one button on the side (right click by default on all Windows Tablets) and a pocket clip on the lid.

In the box there is a set of tips and a tip removal tool. There are two hard white tips and three soft black tips. Personally I find the soft tips too resistive and slow on the screen for my liking. They also wear out very quickly. On the other hand the hard tips virtually never wear out.

The Stylus Feel comes in Black, White and Carbon. Carbon model is shown in our pictures above.

Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet 2 64Gb 3G Windows 8 Tablet – Limited Stock Now Available

May

2013

We’ve been able to secure some stock of the great new Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet 2 Windows 8 Tablet with 3G and a 64Gb SSD. This stock is available for immediate pickup or delivery.

The ThinkPad Tablet 2 is a brilliant companion tablet. If you want a note Windows 8 note taking tablet to take to meetings and on the road then you should look at the ThinkPad Tablet 2.

As you’ll see below, this tablet gives most other tablets a serious run for money in size and weight. It is thinner than my Nokia Lumina 920 phone and is only 10 grams from being as light as my Galaxy Note 10.1 Android tablet.

It runs OneNote 2013 brilliantly and comes with a Wacom Active Digitizer Pen. This is the tablet that note-takers have been waiting for!

The Atom Z2760 “Clover Trail” processor is not designed to be able to replace your desktop or laptop computer. The ThinkPad Tablet 2 is not a gaming machine either. We’ve found that the performance of apps in Windows 8’s “modern” UI (touch apps) can be a little laggy at times.

However Microsoft Office Applications like OneNote, Excel, Word and Outlook run very well on the desktop and the system keeps up with every stroke of the Wacom Pen in desktop mode. Taken for its small size, light weight and great battery life this Windows 8 tablet is a real cure for desktop disorganisation!

New N-Trig G4 Pen for the Fujitsu Q702

2012

The Fujitsu Stylistic Q702 Tablet PC is now available to order from the Tablet PC Store!

We recently took another look at a prototype of the upcoming Fujitsu Q702 and were intrigued to find a new N-Trig Active Digitizer Pen attached!

Here’s a picture of the new N-Trig G4 DuoSense Pen from the Fujitsu Stylistic Q702:

Fujitsu_Q702_N-Trig_Pen

This new pen is a major breakthrough for the Q702 and N-Trig tablets everywhere!

Long term pen tablet users like us have used the Wacom Active Digitizer Pen and going to the previous N-Trig pens was generally a poor experience.

Here’s what N-Trig have changed on the new G4 pen:

  • Pen tip action is now much finer
  • There is no “clicky” feel and no noise
  • Eraser function is available with the extra pen button
  • End of the pen is rounded and feels much nicer.

When you put those refinements together with the high performance “Ivy Bridge” Intel Core i5 processor that is in the Q702 you have a pen experience that is on par with the Wacom Active Digitizer Pen. Wacom has been the gold standard on Microsoft Windows pen tablets for over 10 years.

The Q702’s N-Trig G4 Pen is still powered by a AAAA battery which will last a few months of use. But the upside of Fujitsu’s selection of N-Trig is that the technology is usually much better calibrated that the Wacom equivalent.

Samsung Series 7 Slate–Artists Perspective

Apr

2012

Mobile digital artists ask us about Wacom Active Digitizer tablet PCs quite a lot. For a digital artist – in fact for builders, engineers, sales reps, CEOs, doctors, nurses, students and anyone who uses a ball point pen – the Wacom interface is like a carpenter’s hammer. It’s essential to have one, and smart trades people only have the best!

Many digital artists have used a Wacom Active Digitizer Pen before, so they know how wildly different they are to the poor experience of a capacitive stylus on a touch only tablet like an iPad or most Android tablets.

Of course there are even some cheap Windows Tablets like the Acer Iconia W500/501 that also lack the Wacom Active Digitizer that we consider to be essential for advanced productivity. Keep an eye out and avoid those!

So it was interesting to come across the video below from a digital artist giving his perspective on the Samsung Series 7 Slate which of course features the Wacom Active Digitizer.

Samsung Slate Series 7 – Inking and showing off the dock?

Dec

2011

Samsung have discovered the joys of inking with the Wacom Active Digitizer in Microsoft Office on the new Slate Series 7.

Below is a very simple demonstration of the native support for digital ink in Microsoft Office programs like Word, Excel and PowerPoint as well as the amazing handwriting recognition capabilities of Windows 7.

In reality, it’s much easier to ink when you have your tablet undocked and in your hand or flat on the tablet. I’m thinking that Tablet in the video might be set in the dock to show the fact that it has a docking option.

And that reminds me, the Australian version of the Samsung Slate Series 7 Tablet PC that is set to arrive next week includes the dock and keyboard as shown in this video.

The dock is very small and portable but it gives you the ability to use your Tablet like a PC when you want to. Inputs and outputs on the dock include:

  • Power – Just dock the tablet to charge
  • Full size HDMI – Connect to a Projector, Monitor or TV with ease
  • Ethernet – Essential for corporate networks and maximum network speed
  • USB 2.0 – Connect a Keyboard, Mouse, USB Memory, Camera, Phone – anything
  • Audio – Headphones, Speaker, Microphone.

Of course it also props the display up at a nice angle. The keyboard is a nice compact Bluetooth model.

As a person who spends most of my time on the road, this dock is a very attractive option. During the day, I use my Motion F5v tablet as a slate, taking handwritten notes, writing emails, preparing quotes and showing people information on screen.

At night though, I could be at a hotel room, and I often need to type up some more lengthy information that I’d be more confortable typing. Whilst I can write on screen faster than typing on a touch keyboard (30-35wpm vs 20-25wpm), as a computer geek for most of my life I can still type faster when seated at a tablet with a physical keyboard (60wpm).

With the Samsung Slate PC Series 7 you could carry the dock in your bag and bring it out when needed to make an instant PC!

Anyway, it’s great to see Samsung rediscovering the Windows Tablet PC and finally seeing the benefits of the Wacom Active Digitizer Pen!

The Samsung Series 7 Slate PC is now available for purchase in the Tablet PC Store!

Working with a Pen Makes sense–Urban Planning

Nov

2010

As you’ll see from the following video demonstration, working on massive plans with a Wacom Interactive Pen display makes a lot of sense. This video shows an Urban Planner working with ArcGIS 10 to add features to a interactive plan.

Whilst the consumer technology media goes mad over touch based systems, you can see from this video that Active Digitizer Pen technology is far superior for many jobs that require precise input.

On a large screen like you’ll see touch can really get in the way by causing all sorts of accidental inputs. On the other hand this interactive pen display allows you to rest your hands naturally on screen, just like you would on a plan board.

Urban Planning using 23” Wacom Interactive Pen Display and ArcGIS 10

The Wacom Interactive Pen Display uses Wacom’s advanced active digitizer technology to deliver pressure and proximity sensitivity via the intelligent Pen.

The Digitizer Pen includes several programmable buttons that allow you to perform functions on screen and it can also take advantage of inbuilt Windows 7 Tablet PC productivity enhancements like pen flicks. Darren Higgins specializes in portraiture and commercial product photography.

Pressure Sensitive Sketching on a Tablet PC

Aug
3
2010

A lot of designers ask us if Tablet PCs are good for mobile sketching and drawing. The answer is an overwhelming yes! Many of our Tablet PCs like the HP TouchSmart Tm2 seen below use a Wacom Active Digitizer pen that is proximity and pressure sensitive up to 512 levels.

Whilst they might have a touch screen the Active Digitizer technology is different. It allows you to:

  • Rest your hand on the screen without interfering with your sketch
  • Use pressure sensitivity in Photoshop – press harder for a thick line, soft for a thin stroke
  • Work quickly – the combination of the Wacom Active Digitizer and modern Intel Core i3, i5 and i7 processors means that there is no lag while you are drawing.

Check out the video below from a Tablet PC user in France who is drawing on a HP TouchSmart Tm2.

So if you are an artist or graphic designer and you’re wondering what Tablet PC is best for you, feel free to contact us to discuss.

Introducing the Wacom Interactive Pen Display

Jun
24
2010

We got our hands on a new 22.5" Wacom Interactive Pen Display this week and we were very impressed. The Interactive Pen Display is a simpler version of the well respected Wacom Cintiq Pen Display.

In conjunction with Windows 7 the Wacom Pen Display allows you to effectively turn your desktop pc or laptop (why not even Tablet PC?) into a very large Tablet PC.  You can have access to all of the Windows 7 tablet features like:

  • Handwriting recognition for fast easy input (especially for those who don’t type fast)
  • Advanced and accurate note taking and sketching
  • Pen Flicks for fast editing and control.

The display itself has an exceptional wide viewing angle with perfect brightness at 1080p high definition. But it is the pressure and proximity sensitive pen input that make these displays so versatile.

The Wacom Cintiq and Interactive Pen Displays are perfect for:

  • Design, digital art and sketching
  • Architecture, engineering, drafting, estimating
  • Document mark-up, presentations, office and boardroom note taking.

This is a truly amazing product that we seriously recommend for anyone who wants to have the most advanced and interactive computing experience currently possible.

HP TM2 is a Massive Improvement on the Tx2– TouchSmart Multi Touch Tablet Video Series

Feb
22
2010

The upcoming HP Tm2 Tablet replaces the long running Tx series, and it is certainly a massive improvement.

There are several major improvements for the TouchSmart Tm2:

  • Wacom digitiser pen – better pen experience in general
  • Capacitive multi-touch screen
  • Intel Core 2 Duo Ultra Low Voltage – Cooler, quieter, better battery life
  • Sleek new design – no optical drive cuts down size and weight
  • Much better build quality – in line with the HP Envy series
  • Dedicated ATI graphics – one of the only Tablets with this feature.

The Tm2 is still sports a glossy screen and is very much aimed at the consumer, but the move to Intel processors and Wacom Digitizers brings the Tm2 closer to the business market.
